gn artists, is changed yearly to emphasise different aspects of the collection. Formal portraits dominate the sections devoted to the 16th and 17th centuries, whereas illustrative paintings and some fine æconversation piecesÆ are typical of the output o
f 18th century British artists such as William Hogarth. There are also many fine examples of the æGrand StyleÆ pursued by Joshua Reynolds and his rival Thomas Gainsborough. The 19th century section is dominated by the visionary paintings of William Bla
ke and magnificent landscapes by J.M.W Turner and John Constable. Early 20th century French and German art is well represented, and the contemporary section features works by Francis Bacon, Anthony Caro and David Hockney, among many others.\par
